Position: HEALTH ECONOMIST POST DOC FOR HIV PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS IMPLEMENTATION TRIAL (MTUBATUBA)

Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) seeks a postdoctoral candidate to work at Somkhele on Thetha Nami ngethethe nawe, an exciting step-wedge trial of peer-led social mobilisation into community-based PrEP with sexual and reproductive health services amongst 26,000 adolescents, men and women aged 15-30.

This three-year postdoctoral position (with the option to extend to five years) will be embedded in Professor Maryam Shahmanesh academic team within her large interdisciplinary and innovative  adolescent research program based in the AHRI Somkhele campus in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

The postdoc will work in collaboration with the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE2RO), University of Witwatersrand, on conducting the costing, cost-effectiveness and budget impact analysis of a large step-wedge randomised controlled trial of social mobilisation into community-based PrEP with sexual and reproductive health services on reducing sexually transmissible HIV amongst 26,000 adolescents, men and women aged 15-30.  The study will be carried out in AHRI’s Somkhele campus. The post will be mentored by Professor Shahmanesh, who is the Director for Clinical Research at the Africa Health Research Institute,  a Physician Scientist, and  Professor of Global Health at UCL, with expertise in implementation science, and interdisciplinary research to develop and evaluate complex interventions.  The post is an opportunity for a bright young health economist to develop their skills in costing and cost-effective analysis with the support of HE2RO (https://www.heroza.org).  For an enthusiastic postdoc there are opportunities in learning to use mathematical HIV transmission models with scientists at the UCL Institute for Global Health (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/global-health/). The post holder will be an active member of the centre of excellence in implementation research at AHRI and UCL that Professor Shahmanesh is developing as part of her NIHR Global Research Professorship.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant subject
  • Experience working within a health care setting would be an advantage
  • A background in health economics or economics would be an advantage
  • Strong analytic skills
  • Ability to prepare results for publication and draft own manuscripts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good interpersonal skills and team orientated

The salary for this position depends on previous experience and brackets are according to AHRI’s official scheme and NRF grades, which will be without tax deduction due to tax exemption status for postdoctoral fellows.
